Did you have an imaginary friend growing up? No! But I had an imaginary “me”…does that count? I was always pretending or imagining that I was disabled, either in a wheelchair or blind. I still do, actually.
What is one of the bravest things you have ever done? I realized a dream out of sheer determination. It took patience, blood, sweat, and tears, and was the hardest thing that I’ve ever done in my entire life. I have BIID (see link above, or if you don’t feel like reading, this is an identity disorder somewhat similar to Gender Identity Disorder which leads someone to feel that they need to be disabled in some way), and I need to be a paraplegic. While I’ll probably never achieve that particular goal, using a wheelchair goes a long way to ease the psychological distress that having fully functional legs causes me. After years, decades of repressing and denying this need, I finally broke out a couple of years ago. I started using a wheelchair, and found immense relief from it. I have integrated it into my daily life. That whole process was terrifying, mostly because of “what will people say??” I’m still afraid, but I keep going, despite the fear, because it’s what I need, and it’s who I am.
